How to Start a Study - 1.5T System

There are two types of studies which can be started on the 1.5T scanner, pilot studies and funded studies. Pilot studies are intended to allow investigators time on the scanner to generate preliminary data for grant applications. A pilot study provides 10 hours of time on the scanner at no charge (these studies are subsidized by the Office of the Dean for Research). Forms for applying for a pilot study are available on the main web page for the core lab. Pilot study time is limited and applications are reviewed by a committee made up of funded investigators using the core lab. Funded studies are studies which have been approved by a national organization in a peer-review process (.e. NIH, AHA, Whitaker) and have been assigned an Emory account. Funded studies can be approved the core director. Forms can be obtained on the main core web page.

Before a study involving animals can be approved an approved IACUC Protocol must be in place. IACUC forms can be obtained from http://www.emory.edu/IACUC. In addition to the PI of the project, each investigator on the protocol or those who will handle or anaesthetize the animals in the experiment must take and pass the Division of Animal Resources (DAR) courses for the appropriate animal type. For example, if one is studying mice or rats, modules 1,2,3, and 11 of the Laboratory Animal Training Association (LATA) training from website http://latanet.com/client/emory/introduction.htm should be taken and passed. Upon final approval the animal studies can scheduled.

Before a study involving humans can be approved, IRB approved protocol for human subjects must be in place.

When a study is approved you will be notified by e-mail and you will be able to schedule time on the 1.5T system
